1. INTRODUCTION
CARICOM and CARISCIENCE have introduced a high level annual award to honor distinguished scientists from the region in 2005. The purpose is to give recognition and visibility to outstanding scientific achievements made by individuals from the CARICOM countries.
2. NATURE
The Award will be made annually in the Basic Sciences –Chemistry, Biology, Earth Sciences, Engineering Sciences, Mathematics, Physics, Agricultural Sciences and Medical Sciences.
The Award will carry a cash award and a Plaque bearing a citation highlighting the major contributions for which the award is made. The Award will be presented to the recipient at a special occasion arranged by CARICOM, the Sponsor and CARISCIENCE. It is called the CARICOM SCIENCE AWARD.
3. ELIGIBILITY
Candidates must be CARICOM nationals. The major criterion is scientific research of outstanding international merit carried out at institutions and research centres in CARICOM countries.
4. INTERNATIONAL JURY
Selection of awardees will be carried out by a jury comprising representatives of CARISCIENCE, UNESCO, The World Academy of Sciences (TWAS) and the International Science Council (ICSU). It will be overseen by a Board comprising representatives of CARICOM, CARISCIENCE and chaired by the Executive Secretary of CARISCIENCE. Members of this jury will not be eligible for the CARICOM Science Award.
5. NOMINATIONS
Nominations are invited from Science Academies, National Research Councils, Universities, Scientific Institutions and Research Centres. Self nominations will not be accepted.
